SEWING STUDIO "SAM10" - Louise and Gordon - Tamborine Mtn, Qld

October 2023

Another "CUSTOM" size cabin.  Louise and Gordon have a corner block, so space in the rear of the property was extremely limited.  But after a site inspection and giving our measuring tapes a bit of a workout we designed a custom size for Louise's new sewing studio.  The chosen size was rectangular, the window was placed in the rear wall, and the slope of the site was overcome by using a steel base with adjustable steel stumps.

Busy, busy, busy....

Well, what do you know - we started the build flat-strapped keeping everyone working as fast as we could - and forgot to take photos of the steel foundation base...hmmm   There are plenty of detail photos of the base we are using on other blog entries if you want to check it out!

The images on the right show all walls up already, and the roof beams in place.

Windows are always placed while the walls go up, as well as the door frame, the door is normally hung last.

Again we have run electrical cables for the lights, ready for the sparky to connect everything once the build is finished.

A couple of rain interruptions later..

As mentioned, the space we had to work with was very limited, especially to the right of the cabin.  The bolder retainer wall posed a bit of a challenge when installing the sideboards and eave reinforcements - but with a bit of good will and patience all got done.  As always, the cabin needed to be 1 meter away from the neighbor's border.

We also placed the front left stump post on the existing concrete slab, to avoid digging a post hole too close to the foot path, worked very well.

The rear of the cabin needed longer stumps than we would normally use, this was due to the sloping site we placed this cabin on.

Using height adjustable stump post tops makes leveling out the cabin a breeze.

Roofing in the color of your choice

Importing roofing from overseas together with your cabin makes no sense - Australia is the world king of corrugated iron roofing!

To mine the iron ore here, than ship it to Europe where they make their own roofing profiles, and than ship it back to Oz is prohibitively expensive - corrugated iron can be sourced locally for less than half the price compared to importing roofing.

This also reduces the risk of damage to roofing during transport, plus you can choose your own color!

The most popular color right now (Oct 2023) is "MONUMENT" as used with this build.

We do never install gutters for all sorts of reasons (ask if you like to know) but these can be installed easily after the build is finished.

She-Shed!

There is an intrinsic beauty that is synonymous with all log cabins.  It's the natural look of solid timber, combined with the smell of pine oil that somehow never completely disappears.  The warm ambience of a log cabin invites to relax, calm down and in general enjoy the space.

This cabin will be used as a sewing room for Louise.  We will try to post images of the fully kitted out cabin once this has happened.  For now the cabin awaits being stained in CUTEK "Wood Preservative" in tint "dark ash".  Should look great!
