WEEKEND ESCAPE "SAM10" - Alexa and Mitch, Upper Brookfield, QLD

Feb 2022

Alexa and Mitch own a very picturesque property in the Northeast of Brisbane.  While being located reasonably close to Brisbane CBD it is still miles away from any residential estate.  Hilly and wooded, 4WD access only, it offers a respite from the every-day hussle of the more densely populated areas of Brisbane.

We thoroughly enjoyed being on site, soaking up mother nature and all it had to offer.

Ground Preparations: Excavation / Levelling / Base Frame

Alexa and Mitch started their log cabin journey with a hilly bush block, a stunningly beautiful property close to Brisbane, but still miles away from the hustle and bustle of any densely populated area.

Upper Brookfield is well known as a peaceful area, quiet and remote.

The building envelope was created by digging into the hillside far enough to create a building patch that allowed the cabin to be placed on original undisturbed soil, rather than partly on top of the dug-out soil that was placed on the valley side of the patch.

Drainage was provided by placing road base on top of the newly exposed soil.

Particleboard Flooring:

"TERMIFLOOR" 19mm T&G

European made solid timber garden sheds are normally supplied with softwood t&g floorboards.  Being located so close to the ground the use of TERMIFLOOR t&g particle board flooring is the much better option for the floor of your new cabin.

You will notice that the floorboards are cut to size and installed AFTER the first couple of wall logs are positioned.

This will make for a neat fit reducing the gaps between the wall log and the particle board sheets.

Once the floorboards are installed the REAL fun part starts - building up the walls!

Log Walls and Roof:

The actual assembly of your new log cabin is as easy as playing with LEGO.  All logs are individually numbered and detailed assembly instructions come with your SAM10.

During this particular built we were faced with frequent rain interruptions, typical for SEQ in February.

Adding to the various difficulties caused by the rain we also faced challenges with site access.  Yes, the property is beautiful, but the access "track" posed a real challenge even for our trusty MITSUBISHI TRITON 4WD in low gear (with trailer, too!).

May be it was the driver ?  After all, they say "Nothing can frighten a Triton"!

Wood Preservation - CUTEK Oil and Stain

All our solid timber log cabins and garden sheds are always imported in "raw" timber.  There are several very good reasons for this.

Firstly this aids with the importing procedure.  Raw timbers will readily accept any fumigation treatments AQIS (Australian Quarantine Inspection Services) might apply when the shipment docks at any of the major Australian Seaports.

But much more importantly it allows you to create the ideal look of your cabin's outer.

You can freely choose between paint and oil.  Paint will mean a bit more work initially, but also means less work in the long run.  Oil will maintain the natural and "earthy/authentic" warm look of the cabin, and is available in lots of different stains.

When painting your cabin please first apply a top quality "sealer/primer/undercoat/stain blocker" noting the importance of using a stain blocker type undercoat - this prevents tannins showing through the paint, this can be bothersome and quite noticable particularly in the branch knots of the timber logs.
