We are often asked where one of our beautiful cabins can be viewed. Over many years, we have delivered and built cabins all up and down the Eastern Seaboard, however, they are always located on privately owned land, and as such are not really ready-to-view. Some owners are happy to show their cabins, but that is a favor we can't always ask for. We are very pleased to confirm that we now have our smallest log cabin garden shed "SABINE 4" on display in Coffs Harbour. It is located at "BONVILLE NURSERY" on Pine Creek Road. They are open 7 days a week, and anyone is wleocme to pop in and check it out!
Ground Preparations
The owners of the Bonville Nursery, Chloe and Zach, kindly prepared the perfect site for the "SABINE 4" display cabin, close to the nursery entrance. Being the smallest cabin (Cubby House..) in our range we only needed a 3m square space.
Prior to our arrival, Zach leveled the site and covered it with gravel. We evenly placed 300mm square pavers to support the treated pine base frame (yes, one broke, but it still worked...).
We were able to use our small box trailer to transport this smaller cabin. The weight and size of the cabin pallet also means that this model can easily be picked up by anyone directly from our warehouse in Mullumbimby.
Building up the walls
Base frames for cabins made from 28mm solid wall logs are often supplied with only cross timbers - to create an enclosed frame we added to this two outer hardwood pieces.
We recommend installing the t&g solid pine floor boards after the build has been completed, to protect the floor boards from scratches etc while the cabin is being built.
The door is placed after the first five or so log layers are installed. Trying to do this later on is possible, but not recommended.
We also added a window to this display cabin. The window allows for more daylight to come in, and aids with cross ventilation. Available for all 28mm log thickness cabins at $490
Roof Beams etc
Often, cabins of this type produced in the Baltic States of Europe come with bitumen shingles or like roof covering. This is NOT (!) suitable for our harsh weather conditions. We supply ALL our cabins with Australian-made COLORBOND roofing in the colour of your choice, either with or without metal top hat battens and insulation R1.3.
What level of roof insulation is needed depends on the intended end use of your cabin. If you are likely to spend many hours of the day inside, insulation is obviously a good idea - but it is of lesser importance if you "only" use it for storage.
Our "SABINE 4" has also been dubbed the ideal size for a cubby house....just ask your kids!
Now to the oiling....
All cabins are imported in plain untreated timber. This is not only essential to preserve the natural pine oil smell that will greet you every time you enter your cabin, it also ensures that the cabin maintains it's health benefits, something treated pine simply cannot deliver.
Raw timber needs to be protected from the environment. To preserve the natural look of the cabin we recommend "CUTEK.com.au" Wood Preservative. If you prefer to paint your cabin, apply one coat of a good quality undercoat/primer with "Stain Blocker" or "Graffiti Blocker" first. This is to avoid the tannin of the branch knots coming through your two top coats that need to be applied after the primer. We will post images of the fully finished cabin here soon!
